The terminal application market drives the development of the semiconductor industry, and China is short of semiconductor talents

The application of semiconductor is very wide. According to T4 statistics, the market share of the global semiconductor industry is approximately US$4.810 billion in 2019. T4 also predicts that from 2016 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of the semiconductor industry is 9%. In 2020, due to the impact of the epidemic, the production capacity of semiconductor will decline, and the compound annual growth rate is expected to decrease to 5% in 2020.

In this issue of industry perspective, we invited Sunny Wang, Associate Director of Semiconductor, who has 15 years of recruitment experience in the semiconductor industry and experienced the start and take-off of semiconductor industry in China. She has a first-hand knowledge of the overall overview of the semiconductor industry and the data of talent demands.

Currently, the main driving factors for the growth of the semiconductor industry are the emergence of new packaging technologies and the development of terminal markets. The growth of semiconductor application is based on the following sectors: growing consumer electronics, new wireless and wired communications, the automotive industry, the penetration of medical equipment in the healthcare field, the emergence of artificial intelligence and machine learning, and so on.

In 2020, affected by the epidemic, some applications in specific areas have been developing rapidly. On the one hand, the demand for semiconductors in wired communication applications has surged. Flexible working has given birth to the upgrade of corporate infrastructure. As more and more employees work from home, the upgrade of home working network stimulates the demand for cable/DSL and wireless routers. Higher Internet traffic will stimulate cloud services and related computing nodes. The greater demand for optical fiber connections in the data center will increase the optical and electrical requirements. On the other hand, the rise of video conferencing and live broadcasting has increased the demand for cloud services, and the upgrade of cloud servers also depends on the supply of semiconductors. Working from home will also make consumers buy more gaming equipment, audio equipment and some kitchen equipment.

China's semiconductor talent gap continues to expand

The rapid development of cloud services has promoted the construction of cloud computing infrastructure, and the demand for talents in research and development positions in each sector has surged. The demand for business jobs is more reflected in European semiconductor companies. With the further deepening of market development, the demands for business talents exceeds supplies. It is worth noting that the demand for the introduction of high-quality talents in the semiconductor industry in the past two years was very large. According to official statistics, in terms of Fabless sector, according to the current number of Fabless companies registered in China, market share and future development plans, the industry is estimated the talent gap has reached 220,000, and the number of semiconductor-related talents cultivated by local universities in China is only about 30,000 per year, so talent introduction will also be the key point of the next phase of recruitment.

From the perspective of recruitment, there are certain differences in the salary of semiconductor talents at home and abroad. To give a very intuitive and realistic example, the salary gap may be more than twice between domestic and foreign companies if two candidates with equivalent work experience and academic background apply for the same Commercial port position.

At any stage of the workplace, from beginners entering the workplace to experienced managers, when they face the choice of job opportunities, they will inevitably make unsatisfactory choices under asymmetric information. A period of workplace experience will have a long-term impact on the future career development path.

As a communication bridge between job seekers and employers, headhunters often dig deep into a certain industry field, connect with companies of different types and sizes, and reach different functional positions. They are your ideal workplace partners. Through conversations with headhunters, you can match companies that fit your imagination, realize your dreams, and maximize your potentials. Sunny Wang has accumulated more than 15 years of recruitment experience in the semiconductor industry. She often comes into contact with some outstanding technical talents in the recruitment process, who lacks strategic planning in their career development. She suggests that talents might as well communicate with senior headhunters to find the most suitable opportunities for their development before applying for a job.
